This week on License to Parent with Trace Embry…  Though Victoria may still have a few secrets, it’s certainly no secret that American culture is obsessed with sex.  Madison avenue has long known that sex sells, but what many fail to acknowledge are the dangers that go with sex.  Yes, some promote a “safe sex” ideal, but even they overlook the fact that the dangers are far more than physical.  This week Trace Embry and Rich Roszel talk with OB/GYN and author, Dr. Freda McKissic Bush about the book she co-wrote with Dr. Joe S. McIlhaney, Jr. titled: Hooked: New Science on How Casual Sex is Affecting Our Children.

Dr. Bush is a medical doctor who has been involved in women’s health for more than forty years.  Since 1987 she has been a practicing OB/GYN in Jackson, Mississippi and is a Clinical Instructor in the Department of OB/GYN and Department of Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.  She’s also a partner in private practice with East Lakeland OB/GYN Associates in Jackson, Mississippi.

In February, 2012, she became President/CEO of the Medical Institute for Sexual Health.  She and Dr. McIlhaney also co-authored the book, Girls Uncovered: New Research on What America’s Sexual Culture Does to Young Women.  She is a member of the Physician’s Resource council for Focus on the Family.  She also currently serves as a medical advisor for Heartbeat International and CareNet and serves as Medical Director to the Center for Pregnancy Choices, Metro Jackson, Mississippi.

Today’s topics include:

  • What does science say about human sexuality that confirms what scripture has taught?
  • In light of conversations in recent years about the definition of sex, what constitutes “sex?”
  • How does society define “safe sex?”
  • What is the “third sexual danger” that may catch us by surprise?
  • Sexual addiction.
  • The brain as the primary sex organ.
  • The influence of the parent/child relationship on the child’s future sexual relationships.
  • Using “Hooked” to launch discussions with our children.
  • With a culture more open to public sexuality, and with the current transgender bathroom discussions, what can parents do to protect our children’s eyes from things they shouldn’t be exposed to?
  • Is there a way to make virginity “cool” again?
